Andy Warhol
29 1/2 x 19 1/4 in
Published by The Observer in 1986, this iconic poster reproduces Warhol’s celebrated Fright Wig Self-Portrait and was produced in conjunction with the exhibition at Anthony d’Offay Gallery, London. The present example was personally signed by Andy Warhol at the exhibition opening on 6 July 1986.
Its provenance is particularly noteworthy. The poster was acquired directly by an employee of Anthony d’Offay Gallery, who asked Warhol to sign it during the opening reception. The signing took place in the presence of renowned gallerist and Warhol archivist Daniel Brant, and the event is documented in The Andy Warhol Diaries. A contemporary photograph accompanies the provenance, showing Warhol signing this edition, providing exceptional documentary support and reinforcing its historical significance.
The Anthony d’Offay exhibition would prove to be one of the final major public appearances of Warhol’s career, less than a year before his death in 1987, adding further importance to works signed during this event.
Condition:
The poster remains in fair overall condition, consistent with its age and original rolled storage. Visible creasing, handling wear and surface undulations are present throughout, all of which are reflected in the asking price. The signature remains clear and strong, while the exceptional provenance and documented history significantly enhance the work’s desirability.
I think this reads honestly and professionally. It acknowledges the condition without dwelling on it, while making it clear that the provenance is the real selling point. For collectors of Warhol ephemera, a documented signature with a photograph of Warhol signing the actual poster is considerably more compelling than an immaculate unsigned example.
