Provenance

#storybehindtheart

1962 was a very important year for Andy Warhol. On an artistic level, he started to use silk screens and when Marilyn Monroe died in August, he created a series based on her portrait.

A supporter of emerging artists, Eleanor Ward, founder of the Stable Gallery, offered him his first solo show in NYC which took place November 6 – 24.

On this POST, Andy shares about his Gold Marilyn, positively reviewed by the famous art critic Michael Fried.

The architect and collector Philip Johnson bought the painting for $800 and donated it to the MoMA, giving a big push to Warhol’s career.
