Andy Warhol’s American Indian Series (1977) consists of screen-printed portraits featuring Native American activist Russell Means. 

The work is signed in marker both by Andy Warhol and also Russel Means making it exceptionally desirable. The series reflects Warhol’s fascination with celebrity culture and identity while engaging with themes of representation and cultural imagery.

The poster for the American Indian Series was created to promote the exhibition at Ace Gallery in Los Angeles in 1977. It features Warhol’s signature pop art style, with bold colours and high-contrast imagery in beautiful bright blue tones. The central image; a striking portrait of Russell Means, based on a photograph, rendered in Warhol’s iconic silk-screen technique.

Russell Means (1932 -2012) was an Oglala Lakota activist for the rights of Native Americans, libertarian political activist, actor, musician and writer. Best known for his leadership in the American Indian Movement (AIM) and his efforts to fight for Indigenous rights.

The poster remains a sought-after collector’s item, symbolizing Warhol’s unique approach to political and cultural themes.
