Catalogue Note
Inverted V is one of the most striking ceramic designs produced during Terry Frost's collaboration with Haxby Pottery in 1978. At its centre stands the bold black inverted "V" motif, a form that recurs throughout Frost's mature work and exemplifies his lifelong interest in the expressive possibilities of simple geometric shapes.
Surrounding the central form are rhythmic red and black chevrons that generate movement across the surface of the plate. The carefully balanced composition demonstrates Frost's remarkable ability to create energy through the interaction of line, colour and space, transforming a functional ceramic object into a vibrant abstract artwork.
As a leading member of the St Ives School, Frost consistently drew inspiration from the landscape and coastal light of Cornwall. Although entirely abstract, his works often evoke sails, harbours, sunlight and shifting horizons through simplified forms and brilliant colour relationships. These ideas translate naturally into the circular format of the ceramic plate, where the composition appears to rotate around the central motif.
Produced in a numbered edition of only fifty examples, Inverted V is among the most desirable of Frost's ceramic editions. Coming directly from the Terry Frost Family Collection and accompanied by a certificate signed by Stephen Frost, it combines distinguished provenance with one of the artist's most recognisable abstract motifs.
