Catalogue Note

Executed in 1978, Sausage is an outstanding example of Patrick Caulfield's distinctive visual language, in which ordinary domestic objects are transformed into striking works of contemporary art through the use of simplified form, crisp outlines and bold areas of flat colour. One of the leading figures of British Pop Art, Caulfield occupied a unique position within the movement, combining the visual clarity of commercial design with a sophisticated understanding of art history and modern painting.

Throughout his career, Caulfield was fascinated by the everyday objects that populate domestic interiors. Rather than depicting them realistically, he reduced them to their essential forms, employing thick black contour lines and carefully controlled colour fields to create compositions of remarkable elegance and visual precision. In Sausage, a familiar culinary subject is elevated into an iconic image, its monumental simplicity inviting viewers to reconsider the aesthetic qualities of even the most commonplace objects.

Although often associated with Pop Art, Caulfield's work differs from that of many of his contemporaries. Rather than celebrating consumer culture, he explored the relationship between representation and reality, creating images that appear immediately recognisable while remaining deliberately detached and enigmatic. His restrained compositions possess an understated wit, balancing humour with formal sophistication and demonstrating his remarkable ability to extract beauty from the ordinary.

Printed by the renowned Kelpra Studios and published by Waddington Graphics, Sausage was produced during one of the most important periods of Caulfield's printmaking career. The exceptional quality of the screenprinting preserves the crisp edges, saturated colours and immaculate finish that are essential to the artist's aesthetic.

The present impression also benefits from distinguished institutional provenance, having come from the Prints and Photographs Collection of Davidson College, where it was subsequently deaccessioned to support future acquisitions. Combined with its small edition, excellent condition and museum provenance, Sausage represents an outstanding example of Patrick Caulfield's highly influential graphic work and his enduring contribution to British post-war art.
