Catalogue Note
Created in 1978 during Sir Terry Frost's collaboration with Haxby Pottery in Norfolk, Bowl of Cherries (Blue) demonstrates the artist's successful translation of his distinctive abstract language into the medium of ceramics. Although celebrated primarily as one of the leading painters of the St Ives School, Frost regarded ceramics as another opportunity to explore the expressive power of colour, rhythm and simplified form.
The composition transforms the familiar subject of a bowl of fruit into a lively arrangement of bold black brushwork and floating blue circular forms. Rather than describing the still life naturalistically, Frost reduces the image to its essential elements, allowing colour and shape to convey movement, balance and vitality. The energetic black arcs create a dynamic framework within which the blue forms appear to hover, reflecting the same sense of visual rhythm that characterises his paintings and screenprints.
Produced at Haxby Pottery in Diss, these ceramics were made in comparatively small numbers and occupy an important place within Frost's wider oeuvre. Combining painterly spontaneity with the tactile qualities of glazed earthenware, they reveal the artist's continuing fascination with colour as a vehicle for emotion and abstraction.
This Artist's Proof comes directly from the Terry Frost Family Collection and is accompanied by a certificate signed by Stephen Frost, providing exceptional provenance for this rare ceramic work.
