This striking original vintage poster features Jean-Michel Basquiat’s iconic artwork, created to promote his landmark 2003 exhibition at the Musée Maillol in Paris. Measuring an impressive 66 1/8 x 46 1/2 inches, the poster’s large scale powerfully conveys the raw energy and vibrancy of Basquiat’s graffiti-inspired aesthetic.

At its center is the impactful self-portrait titled “Autoportrait”—the French term for “Self-Portrait.” More than just a portrait, this work serves as a profound reflection on identity, race, death, and legacy, themes that were central to Basquiat’s life and art. The present image was perfectly selected to echo the retrospective nature of this pivotal exhibition.

Although Basquiat passed away in 1988, the Musée Maillol exhibition in 2003 was a defining moment in introducing his work to a broader European audience. By this time, his influence was already firmly established in the United States; this show played a critical role in solidifying his global reputation as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Held in the heart of Paris, the exhibition showcased a comprehensive selection of his groundbreaking contributions to contemporary art. This rare and highly collectible vintage poster, especially in exceptional condition, holds significant historical value. As a piece of promotional material from a major international retrospective, it not only commemorates a key moment in Basquiat’s posthumous career but also serves as a striking visual tribute to his enduring impact on the global art world.
