Biography

Nicola Godden is a renowned British sculptor known for her captivating and dynamic works of sculpture art that beautifully blend strength, grace and emotion. Born with a passion for creativity and a love for sculpting, Nicola has dedicated over 30 years of  her life to mastering the art form and creating pieces that resonate with viewers on a profound level.

 

Nicola specialises in working with plaster and clay for bronze casting. Drawing on inspiration from the natural world  She creates sculptures primarily based on the human form, either in an abstract form or a realistic way. Nicola's works are characterised by their fluidity, movement, and intricate detailing. Her ability to capture the essence of her subjects and convey a range of emotions and tactile experience through her work sets her apart as a truly exceptional artist.

 

Nicola’s Impressive career began at the West Surrey College of Art and Design, where she pursued a BA(Hons) in Fine Art Sculpture. Her talent caught the attention of Madame Tussauds, leading to the creation of a figure for the Windsor Exhibition. Subsequently, she received her first commission through Llewelyn for a private client and was featured in his book "Beautiful Backyards." Nicola's dedication to her craft was further showcased when she created a portrait of Leonard Rossiter for the BBC TV South program "The Cellar Show".

 

One of Nicola's most significant projects was the collaboration with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trusts and Berkeley Homes, culminating in a sculpture unveiled by Sir David Attenborough in 2000.

 

Among her notable commissions, Nicola created the iconic Hammersmith Man figure in 1987, which graced the Queen Caroline House overlooking the Hammersmith flyover for 15 years. Her sculptural prowess also led to commissions such as the Mother and Child sculpture for the Healthcare Capital Corporation in 1984 and the Mother and Child II’ sculpture for Commonwealth Properties in 1991. One of Nicola’s "Icarus," which was featured at the Olympic Village in 2012 and sold at a Sotheby's auction.

 

In 1993, Nicola's contributions were recognized as she was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, a testament to her artistic talent and influence in the industry. Beyond her artistic endeavours, Nicola is a passionate environmentalist who has organized and hosted exhibitions for Friends of the Earth (FOE) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), showcasing her commitment to conservation and sustainability. Her Sculptures have found homes in both public exhibitions and private collections across the UK, America,  Portugal, Turkey, India, Germany, France, and Ireland.
