Laurence de Valmy is an artist who explores the connections between art history and modern social media, offering a fresh perspective on the relationship between artists across time. Her work invites viewers to reflect on how art and communication have evolved, particularly in the digital age.
De Valmy’s distinctive POST paintings reimagine iconic artworks by creating anachronistic Instagram-style posts, blending art history with playful, imagined conversations between artists. These dialogues are grounded in historical accuracy but presented with a touch of humour, encouraging viewers to see well-known artworks from a different angle and engage with the stories behind them. In her practice, de Valmy combines traditional painting with digital techniques to shed new light on collective imagery. Her work often prompts reflection on contemporary societal issues, including the concept of fame, the role of women in art, and the influence of social media in shaping public perception.
Originally from France and now based in San Diego, USA, de Valmy is represented by galleries in New York, the UK, and France. She is also an active member of ArtCan, a non-profit artist community. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art (MUCA) in Munich, where her pieces were shown alongside works by Andy Warhol in the 2018 exhibition The BUNTE Art. Her art is held in several prominent private collections, including the Hubert Burda Collection, the Abrishamchi Family Collection, and the Eileen Kaminsky Foundation.
