Nick Smith Scottish , b. 1980

Nick Smith  is a Scottish contemporary artist renowned for his innovative fusion of fine art and popular culture through a striking pixel-inspired aesthetic. By breaking down iconic imagery into meticulously crafted color swatches, Smith reimagines familiar subjects in a way that challenges perception, blending visual storytelling with conceptual depth.

His artistic breakthrough came in 2011 with a pixelated recreation of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn, a defining work that set the tone for his boundary-pushing approach. Smith’s art plays with dual perspectives: from a distance, his fragmented compositions coalesce into recognizable figures, while up close, viewers encounter intricate, text-driven narratives that add layers of meaning and provoke reflection.

A notable milestone in his career was a collaboration with the Rijksmuseum in 2023, where Smith created a community-driven work inspired by Vermeer’s The Milkmaid for their celebrated Vermeer exhibition. Projects like this, alongside a partnership with Bonhams, underscore his skill in bridging historical masterpieces with contemporary artistic methods.

Over the last decade, Smith has produced 11 solo exhibitions, each exploring diverse and thought-provoking themes. From celebrating the cultural phenomenon of sneakers in Polytheism (2023) to unraveling the mystique of stolen art in Pinched (2019), his works delve into identity, obsession, and the value we assign to everyday objects. His pieces are now held in collections across the globe, a testament to his ability to push artistic conventions and spark meaningful dialogue through his visually compelling and conceptually rich creations.
