Catalogue Note
Created in 2012, Four Seasons of HOPE (Gold Portfolio) represents one of Robert Indiana's most celebrated late editions, revisiting his iconic HOPE image through four vibrant seasonal colour variations. Printed in luxurious metallic gold alongside richly saturated colours, the portfolio demonstrates Indiana's enduring fascination with the expressive and symbolic power of language.
The HOPE image evolved directly from Indiana's world-famous LOVE composition, first conceived in the mid-1960s. By replacing the word "LOVE" with "HOPE", Indiana transformed one of the defining visual icons of twentieth-century art into a message of optimism, resilience and social engagement. Following its introduction in 2008, HOPE became closely associated with Barack Obama's presidential campaign and subsequently served as a major fundraising image for charitable organisations, extending Indiana's belief that art could communicate powerful humanitarian ideals through the simplest of graphic forms.
The present portfolio explores the motif across the changing seasons. Although each print retains the instantly recognisable stacked composition, carefully calibrated variations in colour create distinct emotional atmospheres, from the fresh vitality of Spring to the rich warmth of Autumn and the cool luminosity of Winter. The use of metallic gold throughout the suite lends the portfolio a remarkable visual richness while reinforcing the universal and timeless qualities embodied by the word itself.
Issued in a small edition of only eighty-two portfolios, Four Seasons of HOPE (Gold Portfolio) is among the most desirable interpretations of Indiana's signature image. Complete portfolios, preserved in their original presentation case and retaining all four signed impressions, are encountered far less frequently than individual prints and represent one of the finest expressions of the artist's mature graphic work.
Combining iconic imagery, exceptional production quality and a message that continues to resonate internationally, Four Seasons of HOPE stands as one of the defining editions of Robert Indiana's later career.
