Biography

John Connolly is an acclaimed British landscape painter whose evocative and richly textured artworks have captured the attention of collectors across the globe. From the rugged moorlands of the Peak District to the dramatic coastlines of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, his paintings reflect a deep emotional connection to nature’s untamed beauty. Based in Bolsover, Derbyshire, John works from his studio gallery, where he brings raw landscapes to life through powerful compositions and immersive textures.

With formal training in both visual arts and drama at Doncaster and Derby University, John’s artistic journey began in theatre. He established himself as an actor, playwright, and director before turning to painting full time in 2010. This background in performance infuses his visual work with a strong narrative sensibility and a cinematic quality that resonates deeply with viewers.

John’s painting style is distinct and instantly recognisable. Working primarily with acrylics, he applies bold strokes and experimental textures using an array of tools and natural elements. His use of organic materials such as sand, grasses, twigs, and saltwater introduces a tactile dimension that gives each canvas a living, breathing presence. These elements capture the sounds, sensations, and shifting atmospheres of the environments that inspire him.

A standout among his collections is Woodland Light, a series that explores the delicate interplay of light and shadow within Sherwood Forest and the New Forest. These works are celebrated for their emotional nuance and meditative depth, offering a unique perspective on solitude, memory, and the quiet strength of the natural world.

Today, John Connolly’s paintings are held in private collections around the world. With a steadily growing international reputation and a style that continues to evolve, his work remains in high demand, admired not only for its visual impact but for its ability to transport and transform
